Allergy & Asthma Network Praises States for Expanding Access to Epinephrine in Public Spaces
Nineteen states now allow businesses to stock medication critical to combating allergic reactions.
VIENNA, VA, DECEMBER 15, 2015 – Allergy & Asthma Network today congratulated lawmakers across the country who have passed legislation expanding access to epinephrine in public places.
Nineteen states now have legislation in place that permits venues to maintain an epinephrine auto-injector, with the intention of reducing the time it takes to get lifesaving epinephrine to a person having a sudden anaphylactic reaction.
Sixteen states passed this type of legislation in 2015, including New Jersey and Michigan in the last week. Both bills are now awaiting the signatures of Governors Chris Christie and Rick Snyder. Other states are expected to file similar legislation in 2016.
According to federal guidelines, epinephrine is the first line of treatment when a person is experiencing a life-threatening allergic reaction to food, insect stings, latex or medication. Currently, an estimated one in 13 children in the U.S. is living with a food allergy.
“When someone is experiencing an anaphylactic reaction, minutes count and immediate access to epinephrine is critical,” said Tonya Winders, President and CEO of Allergy & Asthma Network. “By ensuring businesses have the option to stock epinephrine on their premises in case of an allergic reaction, patrons will be protected, whether they have a known allergen or experience a first-time reaction.”
Allergy & Asthma Network will continue to work to pass legislation that expands access to epinephrine in all 50 states. Information on state-by-state epinephrine access is available at https://www.allergyasthmanetwork.org/advocacy/current-issues/stock-epinephrine-entity-laws.
