Latex Allergy Awareness Week Set for October 7-13

VIENNA, VA (August 1, 2018) – Allergy & Asthma Network announces Latex Allergy Awareness Week is Sunday, Oct. 7 to Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018. The theme this year is “Latex Allergy Myths & Truths: What the Evidence Reveals.”

During Latex Allergy Awareness Week, the Network raises awareness about the condition, which affects 1 to 6 percent of the population, and distributes educational resources in print and online. The week is intended to highlight the many issues facing people with latex allergy as well as encourage doctors and patients to stay vigilant in efforts to fully understand the condition and eliminate exposure to latex everywhere.

Latex Allergy is a very complex allergy, because everyone’s experience is unique. Some people have severe reactions while others only experience mild reactions. While there is no cure for latex allergy, prevention of symptoms is possible. The three keys are awareness, avoidance and education – and with better understanding of scientific evidence, patients can learn to live a full, active life with latex allergy.

On October 11, 2018, the Network will host a latex allergy webinar titled “Latex Allergy Myths & Truths: What the Evidence Reveals,” with latex allergy expert Kevin Kelly, MD, professor and vice chair of clinical operations and pediatrician in chief at North Carolina Children’s Hospital. The webinar will start at 4:00 p.m. ET. Register here.

Latex Allergy Awareness Week started in 1997 with educational seminars and poster displays for allergists, hospitals and medical professionals. Interest in latex allergy has grown through the years; many in the general population, including parents, children, school staff and restaurant owners, want to learn about latex allergy and what they can do to provide a latex-safe environment.
