New Healthy Home Working Group Provides Environmental Action Plans

VIENNA, VA, May 2, 2019 – Home is supposed to be a sanctuary. Yet for those with asthma and allergies, the home can be laden with triggers. While evidence has shown a targeted Environmental Action Plan (EAP) can reduce symptoms, this aspect of patient care is often overlooked.

A new collaboration that spans across medical, patient and building fields is determined to change this.

As part of Asthma Awareness Month, Allergy & Asthma Network, American Lung Association, Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Association of Asthma Educators, Green and Healthy Homes Initiative, Building Performance Institute and HomeLab have come together to launch the Healthy Home Working Group (HHWG).

The Group’s mission is to raise awareness of potential issues in the home environment and ensure everyone with allergies or asthma has a tailored Environmental Action Plan.

An EAP assesses the home environment and provides targeted, evidence-based recommendations. Many recommendations are simple behavior changes and cost nothing.

“Many assume they cannot do anything about the air they breathe indoors, even if it includes asthma triggers.” says Tonya Winders, President and CEO of Allergy & Asthma Network. “We have come together to empower people to change their indoor environment, reduce exposure to outside triggers and improve quality of life for those with allergies and asthma.”

The Group offers online Environmental Action Plans and shows in-home evaluations available in different areas. The process takes under 2 minutes and educates those with asthma and allergies about how to address specific triggers.

“We want to make it easy to get an EAP, which has been missing up until now,” says Michael Bowman, MD, past president of Association of Asthma Educators. “Our hope is that these tools will arm patients with a plan to help with their asthma and allergies.”
